Londondeklarationen kring bekämpandet av antisemitism

Drygt 125 parlamentariker från 40 länder antog i förra veckan London Declaration on combating anti-Semitism. Storbritanniens premiärminister Gordon Brown har som förste regeringschef redan undertecknat dokumentet. Svenska regeringen har inte gett

något livstecken från sig i frågan.

Deklarationen är en kraftfull uppmaning till alla politiker att avslöja, konfrontera och isolera politiker och partier som sprider hat mot judar och Israel.

Deklarationen har en tydlig udd riktad mot FN:s Durban 2-konferens i april, som bygger på antisemitism och luddiga rasistiska värderingar......

LONDON (EJP)---Parliamentarians meeting in London at the first ever summit on anti-Semitism called Tuesday on their respective governments and the United Nations “never again to allow the institutions of the international community to be abused for the purposes of trying to establish any legitimacy for anti-Semitism”.
They also called on the European Union Council of Ministers to address the issue of combating renewed anti-Semitism on the continent.

The call came in a declaration drawn up by around 100 parliamentarians from nearly 40 countries- including the president of the Austrian parliament and the vice-president of the German Bundestag- who attended the two-day summit organized by the Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism (ICCA) in conjunction with the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.

The participants declare that the international community “must not be witness or party to another gathering like Durban in 2001,” the infamous UN anti-racism conference, where the focus on Israel to the exclusion of all other issues was widely perceived as anti-Semitic.
The “Durban Review Conference on Racism” dubbed “Durban II” is to be held at the Geneva UN headquarters on April 20-24.

"I encourage other heads of government to become signatories to this historic agreement," Gordon Brown said. "Together our renewed efforts can rid the world of this ancient virus."

The London Declaration called on legislators to “expose, challenge and isolate political actors who engage in hate against Jews and target the State of Israel as a Jewish collectivity.” It also calls on governments to “challenge any foreign leader, politician or public figure who denies, denigrates or trivializes the Holocaust and must encourage civil society to be vigilant to this phenomenon and to openly condemn it.”
The London Declaration also calls on the United Nations to” reaffirm its call for every member state to commit itself to the principles laid out in the Holocaust Remembrance initiative, including specific and targeted policies to eradicate Holocaust denial and trivialization.” It also calls for action on education for the public and the authorities.

The Antisemitic Jew
I am the antisemitic Jew. My origins lie lost in history.

Perhaps my first appearance can be found in the book

of Melachim (Kings), where, as Rav-shakeh, I joined

the Assyrian army besieging Yershalayim (Jerusalem)

and attempted to discourage the Israelite defenders of

the city. Centuries later I appeared in the Talmud as Bar

Kamtza, who, angry with the rabbinic leadership,

encouraged the Roman Caesar to wage war against

the Jews, resulting in the destruction of the Temple.

As we reach the Middle Ages, my appearances become

more frequent. In 1144, as a baptised Jew, now a monk

called Theobald, I helped to spread one of the earliest

blood libels, the Norwich blood libel, by claiming that

every year the Jews meet and choose which child should

be killed. In 1239, as Nikolas Donin, I was responsible for

the first Talmud burnings, by telling Pope Gregory IX

that the Jews are guided by the evil of the Talmud.

In the age before printing, these burnings left whole

communities without access to this vital text of Jewish

law and lore.

Likewise in 1509, as Johannes Pfefferkorn,

I urged the secular and religious authorities to ban the

Talmud, arguing that it causes all Jewish evil.

In 1263, as Pablo Christiani, a baptised Jew, now a friar,

I challenged Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman to debate the

truths of Judaism and Christianity. It was hoped that I

would win, forcing the Jews of Spain to convert to

Christianity. I lost, but Rabbi Moshe was exiled from

Aragon.

As we move into the modern era, my actions have

continued to cause havoc and antisemitic persecution.

In the nineteenth century, as Karl Marx, I said that

the secular god of the Jewish people is money,

prompting generations of left-wing antisemitism,

most notably in the Soviet bloc. In the 1860s, as

Iakov Brafman, I claimed that there is a massive

Jewish conspiracy aimed at the enslaving and

exploitation of non-Jews. In 1935, as the Hungarian

Prime Minister Bela Imredi, I passed laws limiting

the presence of Jews in certain professions; I was

forced to resign when it emerged that I too was

Jewish.

In the late twentieth century, as Holocaust survivor

Israel Shahak, I tried to convince people that Jews

saw non-Jews as inferiors, to be murdered and

abused and claimed that Orthodox Jews would not

violate Shabbat to save the lives of non-Jews

– I even claimed to have witnessed such an incident,

although I later had to admit that I was lying. I falsely

claimed that Jews murdered heretics. I even

portrayed numerous historical antisemitic massacres

as understandable reactions to Jewish behaviour.

My work was commended by another Jew, Noam

Chomsky, who also wrote the preface to a book

of Holocaust denial.

At the moment I am every anti-Zionist Jew,

religious and secular, who embraces those people

who would murder other Jews for being Israeli

or even for being Jewish.

Yes, I have lived a long and busy life.

Some people call me the self-hating Jew, but this

is a misnomer. I am not self-hating, but proud of

my hatred, my ability to cause mischief and

mayhem by spreading my calumnies.
Perhaps as long as there are Jews and antisemites,

there will be antisemitic Jews, an eternal being

not bothered by his paradoxical nature.

Antisemitismen frodas i London

Eleverna vid Englands största judiska skola

i Kenton, nordvästra London, måste nu forslas

i privata skolbussar. Kollektivtrafikens bussar

är för farliga för judiska elever i skoluniform.

På ett år har 31 elever överfallits på väg till

eller från skolan. I stort sett dagligen förekommer

incidenter med hot, glåpord. stenkastning och

ibland misshandel. De flesta överfallen begås

av pakistanska gäng. Polisen påstår sig studera

bussarnas övervakningsfilmer "med intresse",

men hittills har ingen våldsman gripits.

Skolan i Kenton satsar redan över 1 ½ miljon

årligen på säkerhetsåtgärder.

De allvarligaste händelserna tycks ha inträffat

i Hendon. Det var också där som två synagoger

brändes för några år sedan. Bl a förstördes flera

Torahrullar och en oersättlig samling handskrifter

och bönböcker som smugglats ut ur Nazityskland.

Rabbi Naftali Schiff, executive director of the centre

in Hendon Way, which was set ablaze late on Friday,

said: "Photographs of the desecration of Kristallnacht

in 1938 are imprinted on the Jewish psyche of my

generation and seeing scrolls of the law torn and

lying on the floor of my own synagogue in London

is devastating.
"This mindless act of hatred and destruction rings

yet another warning bell across the country to men

and women of reason, tolerance and mutual respect

to join together to ensure the flames of extremism

and intolerance are not allowed to engulf

these shores."

och antisemitiska slagord på ett nyöppnat

koshercafé i Hendon Park.

Ungefär samtidigt råkade en ortodox jude

som gick på pub för att titta på fotboll på stor-

skärm illa ut. Då han kritiserade en annan

fotbollsfan, som skrek antisemtiska slogans

blev han jagad ut på en närbelägen motorväg

och överkörd.

Ännu en gång: Ökande antisemitism i Europa

Human Rights First:

Antisemitic violence continued to rise across

many parts of Europe and North America in

2007, despite improvements in some countries

where there nevertheless remain historically

high levels of violence motivated by anti-Jewish

prejudice. But even in these places, there is

pressure on people to conceal their Jewish

identity. The decline in levels of antisemitic

incidents in some countries coincided with

an alarming trend toward an increasing

number of violent personal assaults.

**

In 2007, overall levels of violent antisemitic

attacks against persons increased in Canada,

Germany, the Russian Federation, Ukraine

and the United Kingdom according to official

statistics and reports of nongovernmental

monitors. In the United Kingdom, violent

antisemitic attacks rose while the overall

incident level declined moderately.

The proportion of antisemitic incidents

involving violent attacks on persons held

steady in France, even as overall levels

of antisemitic incidents there dropped

significantly. In Belgium, the Netherlands

and the United States, antisemitic crimes

of violence declined.

There are undoubtedly a number of other

European countries where antisemitic

violence is also problematic, but where

information on attacks—either from official

or unofficial sources—is much less readily

available.

Between 2000 and 2005, levels of antisemitic

violence had fluctuated significantly in direct

relation to events in the Middle East, which

provide new impetus for those already pre-

disposed to antisemitism in Europe. Since

2005, this pattern has to some extent changed,

with month-by-month levels of antisemitic

violence showing little change. These more

uniform rates show little correlation with

specific events involving Israel and the

Middle East. This does not mean however,

that the threat of antisemitic violence has

diminished. In fact, the new norm is for

very high levels of antisemitic violence,

still estimated in a number of countries

to be several times higher than that of

the 1990’s.

In some countries, the frequency and

severity of attacks on Jewish places of

worship, community centers, schools,

and other institutions has resulted in

a need for security measures by re-

presentatives of both the Jewish

community and local or national

government. Enhanced security can

be credited for a reduction in attacks

on Jewish sites and property in France,

Germany, and the United Kingdom,

where successive governments have

made a strong commitment to protect

the Jewish community.

However, the need for such security is

a powerful indicator of the revival of

antisemitism in recent years.

Monitoring, a vigorous law enforcement

response to individual incidents, cooperation

between the police and affected communities,

and attention to prevention, including through

education, are all needed to combat anti-

semitism and its violent manifestations.

Although some governments in Europe and

North America have instituted effective

systems of monitoring and reporting on

antisemitic hate crimes, most have not.

And, while local nongovernmental organizations

and community leaders provide information

on such crimes, as well as insights into the

response of the communities affected to

those crimes, these initiatives are no

substitute for state authorities

addressing the problem directly.

The academic year 2007-2008 saw ongoing anti-

Israeli and anti-Semitic incidents in various countries.

Among them is Israel Apartheid Week, which has

become an annual ritual in a number of cities on

several continents. So have the calls of the University

and College Union (UCU) in the United Kingdom for

discriminatory measures against Israeli universities

and academics. In several universities, such as on

some campuses of the University of California, anti-

Israelism is endemic.
Much of the visible anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism

occurs in the academic world of Britain, Canada,

and the United States. There are problems in many

other countries as well. The situation is obfuscated

by limited media attention.

Effective counteractions are also increasing.

There is now more exposure of Islamist racism

and anti-Semitism on American campuses.

In Canada protests against anti-Israeli actions

are on the rise. There are also European and

British initiatives to enhance academic colla-

boration with Israeli universities. External

monitoring bodies are more and more exposing

the hate culture and biased actions of some

university lecturers.

The onslaught against Israel and Jews is not

an isolated phenomenon. What happens to

Jews has usually been a pointer to their

societal environment and a sensor of events

to come. This is also the case regarding

academic anti-Israelism. Academic freedom

has been abused so much that in its present

form it has outlived part of its academic and

societal usefulness for fostering knowledge.

The hypothesis that this work takes seriously is
the suggestion that, if an anti-Zionist worldview
becomes widespread, then one likely outcome is
the emergence of openly antisemitic movements.
The proposition is not that anti-Zionism is motivated
by antisemitism; rather that anti-Zionism, which
does not start as antisemitism, normalizes
hostility to Israel and then to Jews.
It is this hostility to Israel and then to Jews, a hostility
which gains some of its strength from justified anger
with Israeli human rights abuses, that is on the verge
of becoming something which many people now find
understandable, even respectable.
It is moving into the mainstream.

global business and finance.

spectrum are converging upon
a shared definition of “Zionism”
that relies upon antisemitic themes,

This is a particular problem in the
blogging sections of daily newspapers’
websites and the bookselling sections
of leading retail outlets. Offensive
material may be removed if members
of the public can persuade host
websites to act, but leading
companies are effectively absolving
themselves of proactive responsibility
for what appears on their own sites.

• Many supposed anti-racists, including
mainstream journalists and politicians,
scorn and misrepresent mainstream
Jewish community concerns about
antisemitism. This contrasts with their
sympathy for similar fears from other
minority groups. Anti-Israel
campaigners deride mainstream
Jewish community concerns about
the antisemitic content and impact
of their anti-Israel rhetoric and
frequently excuse or deny the
antisemitism of Hizbollah, Hamas
and their UK supporters.
